Senior Software Safety Engineer

SUMMARY:  Our team is looking for an energetic and dynamic Software Safety Engineer who will work on-site at our headquarters in Houston, Texas.  The Software Safety Engineer (SSE) is an integral participant in the design/development/verification process and are responsible for performing safety analyses to identify and resolve hazards and risks present in space systems. In this role, you will work with a multi-disciplinary team responsible for both Software and System Safety, and you will interface with software and avionics engineers, safety engineers, quality assurance and representatives from other subsystems to plan, document, and execute effective strategies for eliminating and/or minimizing risk.

• Conducting system level hazard analysis and flow-down of software safety requirements and attributes to computer-based control systems

• Conducting Safety Analyses/documenting results (Preliminary Hazards Analysis, System Hazard Analysis, Hazard Tracking, Functional Hazard, Fault Tree, and Safety Assessments) 

• Assist with the definition of safe computer control strategies, including Critical Items List (CIL), Fault Detection, Isolation and Recovery (FDIR) strategies, hazardous commanding, and control system architectures

• Participate in/Support the Computer Safety Working Groups (CSWGs), Computer Safety Panels (CSPs), Safety Review Panels (SRPs), and Technical Interchange meetings

• Coordinating with verification and validation (V&V) personnel to ensure safety-critical requirements are tested at an acceptable level of rigor 

• Conduct product and process audits to ensure quality controls and processes are incorporated in the development of the product 

• Participate in/Support Test Readiness Reviews (TRRs) to ensure all criteria and appropriate safety measures are being met and achievable  

• Develop Safety and Mission Assurance (S&MA) reports/presentations and perform other S&MA tasks as necessary

Education & Experience

• Bachelor's degree in an Engineering, Science, Technical related field required 

•  10+ years of technical experience as a Safety Engineer in the human spaceflight field. Consideration will be made for relevant experience in System Safety Engineering

• Experience developing and reviewing hazard analyses, fault trees, and safety assessments

•  Analyzing and evaluating flight systems to identify hazards and propose actions to mitigate hazards

•  Planning, performing analyses, and reporting results


Essential Functions

Work Environment: Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on the task.


• Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation.

• Management has the prerogative to select at any level for which the position is advertised.

 Physical Requirements

• Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of the time). May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of the time).
