Level III - AI&T Instrumentation & Controls Engineer

SUMMARY: This position will work on-site at our headquarters in Houston, Texas as part of a diverse and agile team of integrators and aerospace technicians in the Assembly, Integration, and Test (AI&T) team and will be responsible for designing, building, and testing instrumentation and control hardware for spacecraft system, ground support equipment, test support equipment, and test facilities. Also, you will be responsible for all aspects of sensor and harness planning, developing test control and data acquisition equipment, writing procedures and plans for instrumentation installation and checkout.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Work with the design, manufacturing, facilities, test, and third-party engineers to develop instrumentation plans that fully support all planned test activities of the spacecraft or test article

• Develop/coordinate test instrumentation requirements, design, verifications activities and schedule with internal and external customers

• Define, select, and integrate instrumentation - using a mixture of custom, internally manufactured, and COTS hardware - for spacecraft system interface and associated test hardware and ground support equipment. 

• Develop all necessary instrumentation drawings/diagrams/schematics, models, procedures, and other engineering artifacts as needed for the spacecraft interface testing, ground support equipment and facility test equipment.

• Participate in test and integration working groups and gated design and test reviews

• Support the definition and performance of flight certification tests for spacecraft instrumentation and control hardware.

• Lead the installation, calibration, troubleshooting and operation of force, pressure, temperature, vibration, and related measurement systems. 

• Provide input to cost and schedule planning/estimates for facility test equipment. 

• Advise AI&T team on component design decisions such as power consumption and instrumentation precision and accuracy.  

• Participate in the development and optimization of data acquisition systems

• Troubleshoot instrumentation related issues that arise during testing

• Support reduction, analysis, and archiving of test data to support verification tasks

Education & Experience

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Electrical, Mechanical, or Aerospace Engineering required.

• 5 to10 years of professional experience of related technical hands-on experience in the aircraft, spacecraft, automotive, or oil and gas industries

• Experience developing/supporting acceptance and qualification test plans utilizing pressure controllers, environmental chambers, shock/vibration tables, etc.

• Highly desired experience with spacecraft instrumentation and electrical hardware integration in accordance with spacecraft codes and standards.

• Highly desired aerospace test experience; specifically with spacecraft integrated systems.

• Experience with data acquisition systems and control hardware.

• Experience developing, writing, and updating instrumentation installation and checkout procedures

• Experience wiring and connecting electrical hardware and instrumentation.

• Working knowledge of instrumentation devices such as load cells, RTDs, thermocouples, strain gages, pressure sensors and accelerometers. 

• Knowledge of LabVIEW and National Instrument (NI) hardware integration preferred

• Occasional travel may be required (5-10%)

• Strong technical writing and communication skills

• Some experience with 3D CAD Software (SolidWorks preferred)

• Excellent computer skills (MS Windows & Office)

• Experience working in a SCRUM/AGILE environment highly desired

Work Environment: Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on the task.

Requirements 

• Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation.

• Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of the time). May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of the time).
