Institutional Safety Specialist

SUMMARY: Our mission-driven team is seeking bold and dynamic Institutional Safety Specialist who is preoccupied with big questions: Where do we go from here? What are the limits of innovation and exploration? How do we continue to evolve as a species? This position will work on-site at our headquarters in Houston, Texas, will support the Axiom safety team and will be responsible for defining and executing the following Safety & Mission Assurance (S&MA) business execution processes:

• Assist with Managing all business occupational safety efforts (health, safety, and environmental) to promote a safe office, lab and shop working environment

• Assist with review, update and training of the corporate Safety and Health Plan

• Assess for requirement, develop (write) and implement corporate Safety and Health Plan sub-element health, safety, and environmental related policies, plans, and procedures

• Lead or assist with mishap and incident investigations to determine root cause

• Conduct routine facility safety inspection and self-verification audits

• Manage master chemical inventory list and safety data sheet database

• Manage hazardous waste storage and disposal program and associated processes.

• Identify and track health, safety, and environmental action items through closure

• Ensure compliance with OSHA, NFPA, EPA, TCEQ and other health, safety, and environmental regulatory agency requirements

• Provide internal department System Safety and Mission Assurance support when and where applicable

• Provide support in the development of quality systems and processes, record-keeping systems, PRACA, and process reliability standards development

• Assist in the development of safety data management systems for accurate institutional safety record keeping associated with leading-lagging indicators, hazard reporting, action tracking, auditing, etc.

• Assist in defining and developing S&MA program element training requirements

• Provide collaborative safety support to engineering and other Axiom Space departments in the execution of engineering design, assembly, and test processes to produce operational systems for commercial human spaceflight

• Provide Test Safety officer support to Propulsion, Crew Systems, ECLSS, Structures, Avionics, and other engineering departments in support of test article Critical Design Review, Test Readiness Review, and test operations

• Conduct Job Hazard Analysis

• Document problems and hazards encountered in testing and verification processes and provide requisite resolution support

• Provide SMA department oversight support on new facility design and construction

  • Implement and manage Fire Warden, Medical Emergency Response Team, and Spill Response Team

• Drive Axiom Space team to a successful launch and integration to the ISS by 2024

Education & Experience

• B.S. in safety management or related degree and a minimum of 7 years of experience or 14 year of applicable/related aerospace safety experience.  

• Experience with occupational safety program management, OSHA, NFPA, EPA, TCEQ, FMEA, ISS safety processes, risk management and spacecraft Hazard Analysis 

• Background in Safety and Mission Assurance of human-rated spaceflight systems

Essential Functions

Work Environment: Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on the task.


• Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation.

• Management has the prerogative to select at any level for which the position is advertised.

• Proof of U.S. Citizenship or US Permanent Residency is a requirement for this position.

 Physical Requirements

• Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of the time). May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of the time).
